Why WriteScouts?

novel-idea-generator-coverYou may have heard me talking about WriteScouts. What the heck is it anyway? Well, you’ve heard of the Girl Scouts and the Boy Scouts, where kids learn skills that make them better people, right?. As I began taking my writing seriously about 13 years ago, I started by stumbling along. I wrote and thought it was amazing (oh, the joy! I was going to be rich! Everyone would be blown away by my brilliance!), but a writer friend (Hi, DaLynne!) pointed out places where I could improve my writing and I was crushed. but determined to do better.

I read blogs, craft books, magazines. Essentially, I needed to know how to do everything. I started a novel and sent a few chapters to a writer I met online who agreed to give me feedback. Yeah, that feedback was kinda brutal. I worked and reworked and revised, but got stuck in perfection stasis. I couldn’t get past 25K words.

Then I found National Novel Writing Month and learned how to lock up my Internal Editor and get that first draft DONE. That was huge for me, because you can’t edit a blank page. The second year I did NaNoWriMo, I met a fantastic group of people and a few of us started a critique group. That was in . . . 2005, I think. We are STILL meeting and those women are some of my closest friends.

Together, we’ve learned all kinds of things about characterization, plotting, suspense, pacing, setting, etc. I discovered that there are a myriad of skills that need to be learned to make one a better writer, and then I thought, wouldn’t it be cool if there was a group that would teach you those skills, and help you keep track of the skills that you learn (and, I have to admit, I kinda like the idea of earning badges)?

WriteScout was born.

To celebrate the birth of this new program, I’m giving everyone who signs up a copy of my Novel Idea Generator. This is the exact method I use when I’m brainstorming ideas for a new book. The workbook contains step-by-step instructions, a series of exercises that will help you find the book that YOU are meant to write.

Want to Write a Novel? Introducing the Novel Idea Generator

Drum roll, please (go ahead, I’ll wait . . . )

I’ve been working so hard over the past few months putting together some exciting things for you and, tonight, I’m happy to show you the very first offering of my new WriteScout school. People often ask me where I get the ideas for my novels. The answer is . . . in me. The nuggets of ideas are within me, just like you have nuggets within you. That’s how two people can write two different stories based on the same basic premise. But the trick is to mine those ideas, to unearth those gems. And I want to help you do that.

novel-idea-generator-coverAre you ready to find the novel within YOU?

I use a set of questions when I get ready to write a novel, so I put my ideas together in a series of questions that can be used over and over again, in workbook form. The Novel Idea Generator is available on Amazon, but . . . you can get your Kindle copy FREE.

If you’ve ever wanted to write a novel, but didn’t know where to start, this workbook will get you started. Are you ready?

If you’ve signed up for National Novel Writing Month, but you don’t know what your story is, this workbook will give you at least three ideas for to make you a WINNER. These are the step by step techniques that helped me write ten novels, three of which have been published. The exercises are designed to give you characters, settings and plots that combine to form the story that YOU are meant to write. Now . . . are you ready to start YOUR novel?

Trump . . . and the normalizing of abuse

http://www.amazon.com/Fatal-Impulse-Widows-Web-Novel-ebook/dp/B00UB2U7WS/Don’t worry. I’m not going to get all political. Vote for whoever you want. I won’t judge you. That’s the great thing – we don’t have to agree to be able to get along or have a reasonable conversation. But this election gives us a reason to discuss an important topic.

Trump made news last week for a hot mic video that surfaced of him engaging in what he describes as “locker room talk” about women. When I wrote Fatal Impulse, I did a lot of research about abuse. Here’s the thing about abuse – it isn’t all the Burning Bed kind of abuse (if you haven’t seen that Farrah Fawcett movie, watch it – it’s powerful). Sometimes the abuse is more subtle, emotional abuse, where the woman is put down so much, she starts to believe it. This isn’t something that only affects a certain demographic or economic class. The man has the power in the relationship, and he uses that power to take what he wants, regardless of how it affects the woman, or how she feels about it. She is not an equal partner in the relationship. That use of power is wrong, plain and simple. No means no. Consent is required for any type of sexual contact. If it is not welcomed, if it is not wanted, don’t do it. Plain and simple, but men who think of themselves as powerful see women as objects don’t get it. The way we fix that is to talk about it, to recognize that it happens, and to acknowledge that it is not acceptable.

Though Fatal Impulse is a work of fiction, the abuse it describes was inspired by real events. Though there are some protections in place for women who strike back at their abusers, it isn’t always cut and dried. There are women sitting in jail right now because they fought back, but the system didn’t protect them. Women who are in an abusive relationship don’t always see a way out. It’s not as simple as getting a divorce. The abuser often isolates his victim, and denigrates her to the point that she doesn’t see any option but to stay with him.

If you are in an abusive relationship, reach out for help. Tell someone, call someone, make a plan and get out. Start HERE.

You deserve better.

(By the way – abuse can happen regardless of gender. I use his/her here simply because that is the most common domestic abuse.)

Reviews You Want to Respond To . . .

http://www.amazon.com/Fatal-Impulse-Widows-Web-Novel-ebook/dp/B00UB2U7WS/Fatal Impulse got a new review. Yippee, I thought! But, alas, I scrolled down to read the review and . . . it was a 1 star review.

Bad reviews hurt, I’m not gonna lie, but I like the ones that give me feedback I can take action on. This one? Mmmmm, no. This one made me want to stand in my chair, shake my fist in the air and scream, “You missed the point!”

What did she say that frustrated me? “Life with Chad as an abused wife was better than being alone?? Are you kidding me?? Grow a backbone and get a life!” That was exactly that I wanted to draw attention to. Abused women often don’t see a way out. They think staying is better than leaving. The abuser isolates the victim from friends and family to tear down her support system that might enable her to “grow a backbone and get a life.”

Admittedly, Fatal Impulse isn’t a masterpiece of literature. It’s not perfect, nor am I a perfect writer. That said, I hope that it makes people think a bit about abuse, how it damages a woman’s mind, how deep the psychological damage goes, and how often the victim is blinded to the motives of others. Some women want a man, no matter what. They fear being alone above all else. Andi is one of those women.

By the way, Andi was inspired by a woman I knew many years ago. She called me one night from a phone booth after her husband beat her and kicked her out of the car into a ditch alongside a highway. This wasn’t an isolated incident. The guy was a total S.O.B. When she got pregnant, he beat her in the stomach with a broomstick and pushed her down the stairs until she miscarried. The night she called, I got her help, helped her get into a women’s shelter in another state (thinking that would be far enough), gave her clothes and a few other items. Talked to her, encouraged her. Got a call from the Sheriff a couple of days later, looking for her. The woman had been so desperate to NOT be alone, she called her husband and told him where she was. He showed up and she willingly (and happily) went with him. I never saw or heard from her again. I’ve always wondered if she survived.

Abuse is real. If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, get out. Don’t fall into the trap of believing you have no option. Don’t fear being alone.

Diamond in the Rough: Scrapbookers’ Edition

Diamond-ScrapbookBoxes of books have begun to arrive at my office and it’s always special to open that box and hold that real book in my hand (okay, I admit it, I rub the covers and squeal a little every. single. time.). I have to say, I’m especially pleased with the way the special edition of Diamond in the Rough turned out.

Gina owns a scrapbook store and is living my dream. I created the store of my dreams and even let a friend of mine scrap there (my scrapbook convention co-hort has a character named after her in the book!). They have Friday night crops at Memories & More and the characters talk about projects they’re working on, so it was natural for me to include project instructions in the book as bonus content for my fellow scrapbookers and papercrafters. My favorite project included in the book is a gate album, made using the Zutter Bind-It-All. I’ve made a couple of them for special events in my life, so I wanted to share that with my readers.

If you enjoy crafting at all, make sure you get the special edition and check out the bonus content. By the way, there’s still time to enter the diamond stud earring giveaway. Email a confirmation of your book order to me at lori(at)lorilrobinett(dot)com and put “DIAMONDS” in the subject line. Every book order this week gets five entries into the drawing!

So, grab your copy of Diamond in the Rough today, and join Gina and the Friday night scrappers for a night of mystery and romance!

Diamond in the Rough: Gift card giveaway

Rough woman readingDiamond in the Rough is being featured on FIFTY blogs today to celebrate the release (paperbacks are available now, Kindle versions will be released tomorrow & Sunday)! Pick a few and pop over to them to enter the giveaway. And I’d be giddy as a Beagle pup with a squeaker if you’d leave a comment on at least one of the blogs thanking them for hosting me.

6One of my favorite ways to relax is to escape into a good book. There’s nothing like cracking open the pages of a book (or opening a new file on your Kindle) and meeting new characters. Curl up in your favorite chair, drink a cup of coffee, fall in love, solve a mystery, save a cat.

Diamond in the Rough is available in paperback now – right now! The Kindle version will be released Saturday . . . just 2 days away.

I+Love+You+Basket+EarringsBTW – look for me on your favorite book blogs tomorrow, and join me at the launch party on Facebook Saturday!

Diamond in the Rough: Escape to Another World

http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Rough-Book-Lori-Robinett-ebook/dp/B01D7X77GQWhen I was younger, I dreamed of owning my own horse ranch.

I had it all planned out. Literally. I drew plans.

The house would be huge, with lots of bedrooms, with bathrooms for every two rooms, so all my friends could come and visit. There would be a theater room and maybe even a bowling alley, and definitely a pool. But the house was secondary in my dream. First and foremost, it would be a horse ranch. There would be a barn for the broodmares, and a couple of smaller barns for the stallions. The paddocks would have alleyways between them to keep the horses from fighting. Oh, and there would be a huge riding arena. There’d be a race track. Or a show ring. You know, depending on what kind of horse farm I was dreaming about at the time.

As I’ve gotten older, I don’t draw plans for my dream places anymore . . .

I write stories about my dream places, and I totally escape into that world.

And that’s what I want to share with you. Life is full of work, laundry, dishes, broken washing machines and all that not-fun stuff. You work hard. Your day is full of all the things that need to get done. Take some time for you. Order your copy of Diamond in the Rough now, and curl up with it this weekend -escape to the Diamond J. Let Aidan entertain you (and, oh, wow, can he entertain . . . <wink, wink, nudge, nudge>).

I+Love+You+Basket+EarringsPssst . . . remember – send the confirmation of your preorder to get 5 entries into the drawing for a pair of certified diamond earrings, engraved with the words “I love you.” Email a copy of your order to me at lori(at)lorilrobinett.com to make sure your entries get registered.

Blank to 50K: How to DO a Book Signing

Once you’ve written your way to those first magical 50,000 words, then edited & polished to perfection, then published your book, it’s time to market. One way to get your book in front of people is to literally get in front of them.

Do a book signing.

NOTE: I did not say “host” a book signing. I did not say “have” a book signing.

I said DO.

A book signing should be interactive, involving your prospective readers. You will catch more customers if you are active and engaging. Carry through the theme of your book, either capitalizing on the title or a major component of your book. Here are some things I’ve done that worked, specific to my book, Denim & Diamonds:

Prepare: Take a flyer to the location so they can post it in advance of your event. Put your event on community calendars (think TV, radio, newspaper websites). Send postcards out to friends and family inviting them to the event. Notify local reporters – think of a hook they can use to create a story (give them a reason to talk to you!). Put flyers around the community and in your local library and local bulletin boards.

http://www.amazon.com/Denim-Diamonds-Lori-Robinett-ebook/dp/B00M8N210Y/Presentation. This means use a table skirt (I bought sparkly denim fabric), have some sort of centerpiece (I used three glass jars covered with rhinestone mesh, which held LED candles), and a display of giveaway items (I often give away items that feature my book cover & website: postcards, bookmarks and bite-size candy bars – more on that stuff later). Of course, make sure your books are prominently displayed. A small banner with your name is also helpful. I used my diecutting machine to make a banner of blue and silver diamond shapes which spelled out my name.

D&D Lisa won penGame. Have a game to draw people in. I made a game called “Pick Beau’s Pocket” with a big piece of core board, with nine back blue jean pockets (thanks to friends who donated their used jeans! BTW – you can see it in the bottom right corner of the pic at the right, with my friend Lisa, who was the first winner of a pen!). I used my diecutting machine to cut out diamond shapes. Some of them were marked “Winner” and some were marked “Sorry!”, then I laminated them, and stuck them in the pockets. I had this set up on an easel next to my table. I stood beside it and asked everyone who passed by if they wanted to play – no purchase required. Simple game – all they do is pick a pocket and pull out a diamond. One of the prizes was a $10 gift certificate to the bookstore (this is a good way to say thanks to the store for allowing you in – and it instantly gives them good vibes when you walk in and buy a gift certificate before you even set up), and I also like to give travel mugs and nice pens (I usually buy from Vistaprint). For those who get the “Sorry!” diamonds, I offer a consolation prize – a full-sized chocolate bar wrapped with a custom wrapper featuring my book cover on the front and my website address on the back.  I created the wrappers myself, and am happy to send anyone who’d like it a copy of the template.http://www.amazon.com/Denim-Diamonds-Lori-Robinett-ebook/dp/B00M8N210Y/ Just shoot me an email and ask for it!

Celebrate Sales. I offer to take a picture of every individual who buys my book, and offer to let them wear my cowboy hat or my giant fake diamond ring. Then I snap a picture on my phone and post it to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter with the hashtags #DenimDiamonds #LoriLRobinett. This creates interest on social media, and customers often end up then liking my social media accounts. You can even encourage them to post with a simple flyer on your table featuring the hashtags you recommend, to make them part of the action.Ericca - D&D signing

I create a Pinterest board for each of my books and I include things I want to do for book signings, such as foods, drinks, decorations and games.

Remember, a book signing is as much a celebration of your publication as it is a sales event. Think of this as a party.

Have fun, and success will follow!
